The journey of wrestling sensation Bo Bassett is just beginning, but one thing is clear: he envisions the UFC as a vital chapter in his future.
At just 18 years old, Bassett has made waves in the wrestling community, remaining unbeaten at Bishop McCort Catholic High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. With extraordinary stamina and an impressive pace, he stands out as the top recruit in the class of 2026. His accomplishments are already noteworthy, featuring significant wins on both national and international stages against well-known competitors.
Originally, Bassett committed to the University of Iowa, a decision he later reconsidered, ultimately opting for Virginia Tech instead. This shift wasn't made lightly.
"The entire recruiting experience was quite overwhelming," Bassett shared with MMA Junkie. "It was way more intense than I anticipated. It consumed a lot of time, which was time we could have dedicated to training. Constantly checking my phone for missed calls and texts became a bit challenging. Ultimately, it was a decision that involved my whole family. We initially went with Iowa, but after thoughtful consideration, we decided to decommit. Now, being home at Virginia Tech feels incredible. I cannot express enough how fantastic the staff is, how beautiful Blacksburg is, and how bright the future looks. I’m eager to collaborate with them and keep progressing."
Aiming for Gold Before Going Pro
As he navigates through his final year of high school, balancing academics and athletics is crucial for Bassett. Yet, he manages to carve out time not only to cultivate a robust social media presence but also to engage in competitive events, such as the upcoming RAF 5 where he is set to wrestle Cayden Henschel.
"Competing is one aspect, but there’s also the effort put into building one’s personal brand," Bassett explained. "Social media plays a significant role in that. Competing at RAF and other college and senior-level tournaments has been instrumental in my growth. Consistent hard work forms the foundation of everything we’re trying to accomplish."
Bassett's remarkable ability to thrive under pressure at such a young age is evident in his career thus far. Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, a region known for its rich wrestling tradition, he has always pushed himself to compete at higher levels. Although he hasn't yet begun his college journey, he is already setting his sights on the 2028 Olympic Games and a potential future in mixed martial arts, likely competing in the bantamweight division.
"The 2028 Olympics are just around the corner," Bassett noted. "I plan to be ready to contend for a spot on the senior team by then. Last year, I placed fourth at the senior level while still being only 18. I'm on track to secure my position for '28 and represent the U.S. in Los Angeles. That would be an incredible dream: competing for Virginia Tech, completing my degree, and then transitioning to fighting in the UFC afterward."
Recently, Bassett enjoyed an enlightening experience rubbing shoulders with MMA greats at Kill Cliff FC in Deerfield Beach, Florida, including his idol, wrestler-turned-fighter Jordan Oliver.
"It was amazing to meet so many legends like Robbie Lawler and Gilbert Burns, along with some rising stars," Bassett reflected. "Getting to spar with these guys was invaluable. There’s so much I still need to learn, but I believe my wrestling background will facilitate my transition into fighting, and I’m excited about that journey."
A Clear Path to the UFC
While many wrestlers ponder the financial advantages of sticking with traditional wrestling rather than moving to MMA, Bassett insists that his ambitions for the UFC are genuine. This conviction was strengthened after discussions with UFC star Michael Chandler.
"Absolutely, my intentions are serious. I feel quite committed to this path," Bassett affirmed. "Training in high-level facilities like Kill Cliff has amplified my motivation. Spending time with JO, who has experience in this realm, has been incredibly inspiring.
"On a recent RAF card, I interacted with Michael Chandler, who shared that he didn’t take his first punch until he was in his early twenties. Knowing that someone as accomplished as Chandler transitioned smoothly from a wrestling background into professional fighting reinforces my belief that I can do the same. The connections I've made have fueled my excitement about this transition, and I definitely see myself pursuing it in the coming years."
