Flavio Cobolli channels the power of The Hulk in Delray Beach: A Controversial Strategy or a Winning Mindset?
ATP Tour
Flavio Cobolli's journey to snapping his losing streak in Delray Beach is an intriguing tale of sportsmanship and superstition. The Italian tennis player, ranked 20th in the PIF ATP Rankings, has an unconventional approach to his victories: a Hulk tattoo.
The third-seeded Cobolli celebrated his first ATP Tour win since January 4 by revealing his new tattoo to the crowd at the Delray Beach Open. The distinctive green superhero commemorates his role in Italy's 2025 Davis Cup triumph. But here's where it gets controversial: Cobolli attributes his success to the Hulk, a character known for his incredible strength and invincibility.
"In Davis Cup [last year], you remember I [ripped] my t-shirt, so now I have Hulk,” Cobolli said in his on-court interview. "It’s fresh, like two weeks old. I felt like Hulk on the court [then], so now I have to be like him!"
Cobolli's shirt-shredding celebration, which inspired the tattoo, came after he saved seven match points and won a 32-point deciding-set tie-break to overcome Zizou Bergs and secure Italy's spot in the Davis Cup Final. He showcased similar grit against Terence Atmane on Wednesday, bouncing back from four consecutive defeats to set up a quarter-final meeting with Coleman Wong.
But is it the Hulk's power that's driving Cobolli's success, or is it sheer determination and skill? The tennis world is buzzing with this question. Some argue that the tattoo is a superstition that brings him luck, while others believe it's a psychological boost that inspires his on-court performance. And this is the part most people miss: Cobolli's success might not be solely due to the Hulk, but rather a combination of his own hard work, talent, and perhaps a touch of superstition.
In other Delray Beach Open action, American Sebastian Korda defeated countryman Alex Michelsen, reaching the last eight. Korda, the No. 50 player in the PIF ATP Rankings, is the second man to reach three tour-level quarter-finals this season, alongside Ben Shelton. A 2021 finalist in Delray Beach, Korda faces second seed Casper Ruud or Marcos Giron in his next match.
