A Personal Story: Amelia's Journey
Amelia Raymond's story is a poignant example of the flood's impact. Her recently renovated home was gutted by the deluge, with water reaching chest height. She recalls the moment she opened her front door to a river, a scene of devastation with no warning.
"The water was above the mantlepiece, and everything had been floating. It took everything downstairs with it," she said.
Amelia, her husband, and their four-year-old son are now in rented accommodation, facing a very different Christmas. They've had to start over, and the uncertainty of when they can return home looms large.
"Because we don't have insurance, it's all on us. We can't do much until it dries out fully. People with insurance are told it will take six months. It's a long wait," she added.

In the town center, businesses are fighting to stay afloat. Retailers like Jenny Chuter, who owns two shops, emphasize the importance of supporting local businesses during this crucial time. Jenny lost £10,000 worth of stock and has worked tirelessly to ensure her shops are open for the Christmas period.
"Christmas is the busiest time for most businesses. We're trying to tell people that Monmouth is still here, so please come and support us," she said.

"Every time another shop opens, I cry because it's a sign of progress. We're nearly there, and it's fantastic," she said.
