PAPIRI, Nigeria -- A Christmas miracle unfolded in north-central Nigeria as families and villagers embraced their children, who had been held captive for a month. This reunion came after one of the largest mass abductions in the country's history, with 130 schoolchildren and teachers released on Sunday and brought home to the Papiri community in Niger state late Wednesday night.

Emotional scenes unfolded as mothers, with teary eyes, tightly hugged their children, while others were lifted high in the air, their faces beaming with joy. Villagers warmly welcomed them, carefully examining the children to ensure their safety.

"This Christmas, we celebrate with our children, and we are overjoyed. This Christmas will be unlike any other," said Yusuf Timothy, whose daughter, Rejoice, was among the freed students. The joy was palpable as families embraced their loved ones, sharing tears of relief and happiness.

"I am overjoyed," Rita Marcus exclaimed, tears streaming down her face as she reunited with her son. "This happiness is overwhelming."

The schoolchildren's release marks a significant moment in the ongoing battle against school kidnappings driven by ransom demands, which have become a pressing security concern in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa.

Initially, authorities reported the abduction of 303 schoolchildren and 12 teachers, but later revised the number to 230. Despite the revised figure, all children have now been released, according to the authorities, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.

Most of the children were between the ages of 10 and 17, according to the school. One student, Onyeka Chieme, recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that gunmen threatened to shoot them during the attack. Yusuf Timothy shared a similar sentiment, expressing the emotional toll the event had on his family, as they had to put their lives on hold.

"Even in sleep, my wife and I find ourselves thinking and crying. When will we see our child again?" he wondered.
