His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, has consistently blamed Putin for her husband's death, a charge vehemently denied by Russian officials.
And this is the part most people miss: epibatidine, while naturally occurring in wild dart frogs, can also be synthesized in a laboratory. European scientists suspect that the substance used on Navalny was indeed lab-made. Its effects on the body are akin to nerve agents, leading to a slow and painful death.
Navalny's earlier poisoning in 2020, which he attributed to the Kremlin, serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers he faced. His family's efforts to seek treatment in Germany and his subsequent return to Russia, only to be imprisoned, highlight the relentless persecution he endured.
The U.K. has a history of accusing Russia of violating international bans on chemical and biological weapons. They point to the 2018 attack in Salisbury, targeting former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal with the nerve agent Novichok, as evidence of Russia's involvement in such heinous acts.
