A tragic incident unfolded when a man was shot and killed after he threatened police officers with a bow and arrow. This dramatic confrontation occurred during a welfare check at a rural property located on Quia Road in Gunnedah, New South Wales, which lies approximately 75 kilometers west of Tamworth.
According to Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland, the officer's decision to use their firearm was described as a "split-second decision." This situation escalated quickly; police had initially been talking to the man outside his home. However, he subsequently went back inside, only to return wielding the bow and arrow.
Holland recounted that the man aimed the weapon at the officers, prompting them to take cover behind their vehicle. In response to the perceived threat, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man once. Despite the immediate assistance provided by paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
“These incidents are inherently complex and involve rapid decision-making by the officers involved,” Holland remarked during a press briefing in Gunnedah. He assured that a thorough investigation—conducted by a critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s homicide squad—would be undertaken to clarify the specifics surrounding the man's death. Detectives were dispatched from Sydney to Gunnedah that evening, with the investigation expected to unfold over several days.
Furthermore, the Professional Standards Command will review the investigation, ensuring oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
Prior to the shooting, local residents had alerted authorities, indicating that the man was obstructing traffic on the road, which is a two-lane rural route with a speed limit of 100 km/h. This information highlights the urgency of the police response, as the road is frequently used by drivers traveling in both directions.
Holland indicated that the mental health status of the deceased individual would be a significant aspect of the ongoing inquiries, mentioning that law enforcement officers were in communication with his family on the day of the incident.
