Get ready for an exciting journey into the world of Disney's Magic Kingdom! We've got an exclusive first look at the highly anticipated refurbishment of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, and trust us, it's out of this world!
The Mission Unveiled: A New Adventure Awaits
Today, Good Morning America gave us an incredible sneak peek into the revamped attraction, revealing some amazing changes that will take your space adventure to the next level.
Wyatt Winter, the Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, shared insights into the refreshed opening sequence, setting the stage for an epic battle.
"Imagine stepping into a world where our alien friends open the airlock, and you're about to embark on a mission to face Emperor Zurg. But fear not, for Buzz Lightyear himself will join you in this cosmic battle!" Winter exclaimed.
And here's where it gets even more exciting...
Meet Buddy, Your New Space Companion
Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar have created a new support robot, Buddy, who will prepare you for your mission. Buddy ensures you're ready for action with system checks and a boost of encouragement. It's like having your very own space guide!
Shay, the Visual Effects Designer, revealed the magic behind the hyperspace tunnel sequence.
"We've installed brand-new media to enhance this refreshed version. You'll see Buzz Lightyear for the first time, and Zurg, releasing space mines for you to blast and score points!" Shay explained.
Tasha from Pixar shared the challenges of animating for the tunnel environment.
"Animating in a tunnel is a unique experience. We created a flattened grid to animate on, and when projected, it looks absolutely seamless!" Tasha said, highlighting the technical wizardry behind the scenes.
A New Spin on the Ride Experience
The refurbishment brings redesigned vehicles with a Star Command twist, featuring onboard screens for real-time scoring. Say goodbye to fixed blasters and hello to handheld ones with vibration, sound effects, and an always-on laser for precise targeting.
Interactive targets now light up when hit, providing instant feedback during gameplay. It's like a video game come to life!
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin closed its doors in August 2025, but fear not, as it's set to reopen in the spring of 2026. Disney hasn't revealed an exact date yet, keeping us all on the edge of our seats.
